Purif is distraught when her lover is betrothed to another. When she summons the old ways to curse him, her erratic behavior is interpreted as demonic possession, and the villagers turn against her with physical and sexual violence.

Plot

Purificata (Daliah Lavi), a young peasant living in a small village in Southern Italy, is considered a witch by the locals; incurring this way into their wrath - up to a point where she is condemned to a terrible sentence as a punishment to her supposedly evil deeds.
