A kooky waiter and sometimes vaudevillian promises to get his employer's daughter into a Broadway show. When he kidnaps the show's star, she gets her opportunity, as the understudy, to play the role and become a star herself.

Plot

Crickets is the cheery, lovable chef at gangland's favorite restaurant and, inadvertently ( and barely explainable), he becomes a hero in their eyes and becomes their unwilling leader. A romance between Mary Brennan and Jimmie Moore is put on hold as the gang and Mary's mama wishes for Mary to become the star of the current version of "George White's Scandals," and the current version of Mr. White's Scandals already has a star in Miss Helen King, who can sing real loud. In order for Mary Brennan to become the star, Cricket has to kidnap Miss Helen King. Miss Helen King does not wish to be kidnapped as she is quite content with being the star of "George White's Scandals", and her objections cause Cricket a problem or two.
